We want to show of the St. Louis area and some local photographers so we put a call out and this blog is the result. We hope this will inspire you to go out and explore the area and capture some great images.

STL through the eye of our local photographers.

We decided to pull the community together and get some of their favorite hidden or iconic St. Louis locations as both inspiration and education for all of you. Some of these places you may know, but other are less known or are just shots with unique STL backdrops. We have kept this in the photographers’ own words.

We hope this inspires you to go out and shoot more in this wonderful city. When you do go out and explore the city, please share your images on our FaceBook feed:

The Missouri Botanical Garden has long been a favorite location for me.  I'm a native St. Louisan, and I've been a member of the Garden for many years now.  It is a place that is suited for beautiful photos all year round, both day and night.  In recent years, all of the plant life there has been supplemented by the various light displays and sculptures that have occurred on the Garden grounds.

I've been taking photographs now since the mid-1980's, all with Nikon equipment.  I'm currently using a Nikon Z8 with Nikon Z lenses.

Perhaps not for everyone, but cemeteries can be unusual and dramatic settings for portraits and photo shoots. And St Louis is home to two of the largest and most historic, Bellefontaine and Calvary which are located next to each other off West Florissant Blvd. Bellefontaine is also an arboretum and the landscape is stunning year-round with beautiful trees and flowers.

Equipment is Canon R6 MK2, lenses are Canon 10-24mm, 24-240mm and 100-400mm

Haley Strohschein

Gear: Nikkormat FT, Portra 400

I'm Haley; I grew up in the pacific northwest and left school with studied in digital photography and design and my BA in English. Upon moving to Saint Louis and pursuing other career paths, I learned to fall in love with photography again through the 35mm format, using my partner's family camera, a beat up little Nikkormat. The simplicity of the camera drew me toward the streets of the city and neighborhoods, often to document the mundane, overlooked spots; spots that to me, make Saint Louis beautiful and wholly singular. I subsequently grew to love my adopted city as I captured everyday moments and objects; there are so many pockets of culture in Saint Louis that no one street ever feels the same, no matter how many times I traverse them. Pictured are benches just off Cherokee Street, unassuming at first glance, but offset from the surroundings in such a way that made me stop and take notice. It's what I've grown fond of in Saint Louis; endless stories on every street if you stop to look at them.

Carole Allen

Hi! I'm Carole Allen and I've been into photography for a little over 13 years. I started my journey with a used Pentax and now I shoot Canon. I have two R6 Mark II camera bodies and way too many lenses.

I love the Cedar Hill Mill because of its location and the fact that it's not known so much outside of Jefferson County, where I live. Usually, there's no one there when I've been. When I look at old buildings like this, I always think about the stories the walls could tell.

This was taken in February of 2024 with my R6 II and an RF 24-105mm lens. F22, 24mm, 1/30sec, 100 ISO
